In the wake of the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many other members of the Black community, Pacifica Education Foundation (PEF) feels that it needs to share some thoughts. Faced with this tragic reminder that racism in our country is still an obstacle that people of color encounter every day, it is hard not to be overwhelmed with disgust and frustration.
PEF condemns these acts of violence that represent a disregard for fundamental human rights. While we as individuals may be powerless to eliminate racism across the country, there are actions we each can take that do contribute to increased equity for all people, particularly PEF’s work to support Pacifica School District in providing quality programming for students. PEF is fortunate to support a community that is incredibly diverse where everyone is valued and we are proud to work towards a mission that supports improving the education and well-being of Pacifica students regardless of race, religion, or means.
At PEF, we are steadfast in our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We stand with those who are working to address issues of injustice and offer a word of care and condolences to the Pacifica residents who are directly or indirectly affected by these events. Each of us has the opportunity to make choices that make our world more inclusive and equitable. It is only through individuals across the country, each of us making a conscious effort to recognize our own prejudices and with a commitment to do better, that racism can be overcome. PEF is dedicated to doing its part. May this tragedy become a historic turning point for real change!
